The Legend of the Hagoromo
Ayashi no Ceres is based on an ancient legend that is not only present in Japan, but all over the world . It keeps the basic story of a being who decends from
the heavens and a human meet by way of hagoromo and wed. Hagaromo is translated into Celestial Robe(s). There are various versions of this legend around the world.
Legend as told to Aya
One day a young man was walking along the seashore. He saw several celestial beings bathing in the water. Hanging on a pine tree were some beautiful robes. realizing that they belonged to the celestail beings, he quietly stole one and took it home. The being whose robe was stolen was unable to return to heaven. She saw the young man and suspiciously asked "Have you seen my robe? If you have it, please return it to me." However, the young man ignored her. Helpless and unable to return home the tennyo became the man's wife. After they were married for several years and she had borne him several children, she heard her children sing a little song. It was about a man who had hidden a robe. The celestial being found the robe and returned to heaven, leaving her husband and children behind.
